How to ‘sketch’ in real time. The method I use involves looking at a building and deconstructing it into ‘shapes’. Then adding shapes and details to the drawing by ‘comparing’ other items in the scene to achieve correct placement. We will work outside to learn to use this technique.

About the event
Train your eyes - and your brain - to judge proportional, placement and spacing. Constantly compare visual relationships to make your sketch more accurate without needing rulers or grids.
People want to paint, but are concerned they cannot draw properly. This helps to simplify the process and give you a technique you can use on the spot, urban sketching, and travel journals.
A sketch starts with the largest item in the scene. Everything else is compared to the height, width and angle of this item. Breaking the scene into simple geometric shapes is the first step.
Once the initial largest shape is blocked in then you move onto putting shapes within the shapes. Things such as windows and doors. Using comparisons to determine size and placement within the shapes and the scene as a whole.
This helps simplify the overall scene and reduce the overwhelm with urban sketching. This techniqu…
